The Late Effects of Polio

There were over 40,000 cases of poliomyelitis recorded in Australia in just over a 20-year period last century, plus migrants and refugees arriving with a history of polio.

People make an extraordinary level of recovery from acute poliomyelitis, however the axonal sprouting that enables this recovery retracts due to a range of factors. This changes treatment recommendations, particularly as a person gets older.

Evidence-based treatment and management strategies will be discussed, along with leaving resources to help health professionals understand this condition.
